忏悔好像是宗教起步的必经之路。佛教《华严经》有段忏悔文据说从唐朝时期开始就有了：

往昔所造诸恶业，皆由无始贪嗔痴，
从身语意之所生，一切我今皆忏悔。
罪性本空由心造，心若灭时罪亦亡，
罪亡心灭两俱空，是则名为真忏悔。
这个佛教忏悔文让我想起基督教的confiteor,拉丁语忏悔（英文confession）祷文的意思。Confiteor是天主教弥撒开始由神父带众信徒一起朗诵的第一个祷文。某些新教教派，如Lutheran 和Anglican (在美称Episcopalian) 派也保留了以朗颂confiteor 开始礼拜的传统。弥撒礼拜念Confiteor 也有千年以上的传统，算起来跟《华严经》一样历史悠久。正统的confiteor 是拉丁语版本：

Confiteor Deo omnipotenti, et vobis fratres, quia peccavi nimis cogitatione, verbo, opere et omissione: meaculpa, meaculpa, meamaxima culpa. Ideo precor beatam Mariam semper Virginem, omnes Angelos et Sanctos, et vos, fratres, orare pro me ad Dominum Deum nostrum

英文译成：

I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

同佛教的忏悔文一样，confiteor 也指出人自己可以从身体、语言和意念上犯错误，需要忏悔。不管是通过佛教的空还是基督教的上帝拯救自己，首先人要有忏悔之意。


人如果沾沾自喜或狂妄自大到没有丝毫忏悔、不满之意，当然就看不到自己有被拯救的必要了，就不会把宗教信仰放在眼里。这应是不同宗教相通的地方之一。
