Are some obsessions inherently harmful to society?

In today's world, the relentless pursuit of success and victory permeates every field and corner of human activity. It is as if the history of the Earth has been overtaken and defined by monotheistic culture and its variants. But this culture, for all its global dominance, lacks the natural harmony of polytheistic traditions and harbors deep logical flaws.

The Logical Fallacies of Monotheism

Monotheism begins with the assertion of an all-encompassing good—light without darkness. Yet this very assertion is its undoing. Without darkness, the concept of light would not exist. To address this contradiction, monotheistic traditions introduce dualistic elements like angels and devils, leading to the inevitability of a final battle, the so-called apocalypse. This worldview, marked by its rigid duality, bears a striking resemblance to cult-like thinking: absolute, uncompromising, and apocalyptic in nature.

So why has this worldview come to dominate much of human history? The answer lies in fear and doubt.

Fear and the Origins of Obsession

Self-awareness, the cornerstone of human consciousness, reveals a troubling reality: the self is constantly obscured by the “other.” This inability to fully grasp the essence of oneself creates anxiety, often rooted in the fragility of the physical body. What does the destruction of the body mean? This unknowable darkness fills humanity with fear.

In response, people turn away from worshiping tangible creations, like statues or icons, and instead venerate intangible ideals and sacred names. Yet these ideals, much like television plots, lack the foundation of true understanding. Just as a television show offers no explanation for the workings of the television itself, religious mysticism merely replaces one narrative with another.

This inability to reconcile fear and doubt leads to obsessive behavior. For instance, the repetitive nature of scientific experiments mirrors religious rituals—an attempt to seek reassurance through endless repetition. The cold certainty of mathematics, where 1 + 1 always equals 2, provides solace because it is verifiable and repeatable. However, even this certainty is questioned, as humans obsessively try to prove why 1 + 1 equals 2.

The Rational Madness of Humanity

This obsessive drive for reassurance exposes a troubling truth: humanity, despite its claim to rationality, is inherently irrational. Worse, the cold logic of the “rational madman” often leads to acts of unimaginable cruelty. Unlike animals, which pursue survival, humans pursue victory—endlessly and unnecessarily.

This relentless pursuit becomes a self-fulfilling justification for original sin or inherent evil, as if cruelty and obsession were divinely ordained. But why should any deity bear the blame for humanity's self-inflicted madness?

The Role of Culture and Environment

Confucius famously said, “By nature, men are nearly alike; by practice, they grow wide apart.” This observation underscores the critical role of cultural and environmental influences in shaping human behavior. The culture of obsession, fueled by fear and doubt, is not an inherent part of human nature but a learned behavior.

For instance, it is wise to advise expectant mothers to avoid consuming violent or disturbing content, as the environment profoundly influences the development of a child. Similarly, societies must be mindful of the cultural narratives they propagate, as these stories shape collective obsessions and fears.

Conclusion: A Path to Balance

Obsessions, particularly those rooted in fear and doubt, can be deeply harmful to society. They drive humanity toward endless cycles of repetition and conquest, often at great cost to both individuals and the planet. To break free from these cycles, humanity must confront its fears and question its assumptions.

Instead of worshiping abstract ideals or chasing unattainable victories, societies might benefit from embracing a philosophy of balance and harmony—one that values existence over conquest, and understanding over obsession. In this way, the lessons of the past can serve as a guide to a more sustainable and peaceful future.
